Door and Window Security Checklist for Everyday Homes
A straightforward checklist for assessing and improving door and window security in any home, with practical tips for older Australians.
Doors and Windows Are Your First Line of Defence
The majority of home break-ins occur through doors and windows. A simple security check can help you identify weaknesses and make practical improvements without spending a fortune.
External Doors
Check that all external doors are solid-core or metal-clad. Ensure each door has a deadlock or a sturdy lock with a keyed cylinder. A door viewer (peephole) lets you see who is outside before opening. Door chains or limiters provide an extra layer of control when answering the door.
Door Frames and Hinges
A lock is only as strong as the frame it sits in. Check that door frames are solid and not warped or cracked. Ensure hinge pins are on the inside of the door so they cannot be removed from outside. Reinforce strike plates with longer screws that reach into the wall framing.
Sliding Doors
Sliding doors can be vulnerable if not properly secured. Ensure the track is clean and the door locks firmly. Add a secondary blocker such as a charley bar or a wooden dowel in the track to prevent the door from being forced open. Check that the glass is not easily removable from the outside.
Ground-Floor Windows
All ground-floor windows should have keyed locks or latches that prevent them from being opened from outside. Check that windows close fully and that frames are not damaged or rotting. Consider security screens or films for windows you want to keep open for ventilation.
Upper-Floor Windows
Upper-floor windows that can be reached from a balcony, low roof, or climbable structure should also be locked. Do not assume height alone is a sufficient barrier. Check that window locks are easy to operate from inside for emergency escape if needed.
Garage and Shed Doors
Garage and shed doors are often overlooked. Ensure these are locked with the same care as main entry doors. If your garage connects to your home, the internal door should also be solid and locked. Do not leave garage remotes in vehicles parked outside.
Professional Assessment
This checklist provides general guidance only. If you are concerned about the security of your doors or windows, a licensed locksmith or security professional can provide a tailored assessment. In an emergency, contact your local emergency services.
